Experimental Video

This is a compilation of some experimental video and film productions that I have been working on in the past years.

©The Magic Rock (2007)

This short film was created over one climbing trip to Longs Peak, in the Rocky Mountain National Park of Colorado. As a mountaineer and a filmmaker, I realized that almost any climbing film is only about a "star" who is the main character doing "sick" climbs. At the most, we find documentaries about expeditions, but I never saw a movie that is more like a novel, or a comedy, forget about the humor and the fiction. Thus, I created this short movie as an attempt to brign those elements into Adventure Film.

As a mountaineer, I always try to do anything that would take me up to the mountains. Most of these videos (with the exception of Frank's Feet) were made with the first intention of reproducing in a graphical, yet experimental manner, the effects of high altitude on the human body.

Mountaineering demands endurance and repetition of movements, of activities. This is only a personal pioneering into this type of film/video

This is the last experimental video I have made in the subject of high altitude effects on the human body. I am not very happy with the last result, so now I am working on different footage to incorporate in it and to replace some of these clips. Also, the low resolution did not result as I was expecting. However, the concept is here.

"Change"

This is an experimental video (a "montage")shot with a HD Panasonic P2 camcorder for an assignment at the University of Denver.

"Until" (rough cut)

This short movie is still on post-production. It is not for commercial purposes, but for an academic assignment. I hope you'll enjoy watching it!

"Until" (final cut)

And this is the final cut of "Until". Unfortunately there was some issue with some files that somebody deleted from my work station in campus, and I did not have the will, the time, and the energy to re-take, so I had to improvise by repeating a couple of clips.

About Me

I was born and raised in Mexico City in a middle class society, right on the edge between the somewhat wealthy neighborhoods and the not so privileged ones; thus I had friends from both ends. I studied photography in the best private school of photography in Mexico at the time (Escuela Activa de Fotografia) At a young age I decided that I did not want to stay all my life in the city; however, life was not easy, and my dream did not consolidate until I was 25, when a cousin of mine sold me a cheap ticket to go to Europe. Once in "The Old Continent" I ripped my return ticket and found a way to survive. I had to learn a new language and meet people. I did have some contacts of european friends or their relatives, and many names come to my mind when I want to appreciate my guardian angels at that time. From Europe I was able to travel to Asia a few times. Nepal is still my favorite place of all, and part of my life and heart remains in Ticino, the beautiful Italian part of Switzerland!

Today, I am enrolled in a terminal degree, Masters of Fine Arts, at the University of Denver, majoring in Digital Media. I expect to graduate on May 2009.

In the mean time I work with Ovo Films, a Denver based production company (www.ovofilms.com)

I am planning to go to Mount Everest as a cameraman either in Spring 2009, or 2010, and with a Mexican expedition, also to Mount Everest in 2011.
